How to Add UTM Parameters to Google Ads and Track in Lawmatics

Tracking your Google Ads performance within Lawmatics is simple using UTM parameters, specifically focusing on utm_source and utm_campaign. This allows Lawmatics to automatically assign the correct source and campaign to incoming leads.


1. Understanding UTM Parameters

  • UTM Source (utm_source): Identifies where the traffic originates (e.g., google).
  • UTM Campaign (utm_campaign): Specifies the campaign name or promotion.

Example URL with UTM parameters:

https://www.yourwebsite.com/?utm_source=google&utm_campaign=spring_sale 

2. Adding UTM Parameters to Google Ads

Option A: Using Final URL with UTM Parameters

  1. Log in to Google Ads.
  2. Navigate to Campaigns > Ads & Extensions.
  3. Select the ad you wish to edit and modify the Final URL, adding UTM parameters:
    https://www.yourwebsite.com/?utm_source=google&utm_campaign=spring_sale 
  4. Click Save.

Option B: Using a Tracking Template (Recommended)

  1. In Google Ads, go to Settings > Campaign Settings.
  2. Locate the Tracking Template section.
  3. Enter the following tracking template:
    {lpurl}?utm_source=google&utm_campaign={campaignid} 
    • {lpurl}: Inserts the landing page URL dynamically.
    • {campaignid}: Captures the campaign ID from Google Ads.
  4. Click Save.

3. Setting Up UTM Tracking in Lawmatics

Important: UTM tracking in Lawmatics only works if leads are filling out an embedded Lawmatics form on your website or landing page. If you haven’t embedded a form yet, follow these instructions: How to Embed a Lawmatics Custom Form.

  1. Log in to Lawmatics.
  2. Navigate to Settings and select Marketing Sources.
  3. Click Add New Source:
    • Name: Enter a recognizable name (e.g., "Google Ads").
    • URL Params Match Value (UTM_Source): Enter google.
  4. Click Save.

  1. Next, add a new campaign under this source:
    • Name: Specify the campaign name (e.g., "Spring Sale").
    • URL Params Match Value (UTM_Campaign): Enter spring_sale.
  2. Click Save.


4. Installing the Lawmatics Tracking Pixel

  1. In Lawmatics, go to Settings > Tracking Settings.
  2. If your website isn’t listed, click Add Website and enter your site details.

  1. Paste this tracking pixel into your website’s code, preferably on pages with contact forms.

5. Testing and Verification

  • Test Your URLs: Use Google Ads' URL testing tool to confirm your UTM parameters are correctly appended.
  • Verify in Lawmatics: Submit a test form using a tracked Google Ads link, then check Lawmatics to confirm the correct Source and Campaign are assigned.
