What is Merlin Qualify?
Qualify is an AI-powered intake and lead evaluation tool built directly into Lawmatics. It helps firms automatically evaluate every new lead, prioritize high-value prospects, and take action faster using consistent, firm-defined rules.
Qualify provides transparent reasoning for every evaluation, and can trigger automations based on lead outcomes.
With Qualify, firms can:
Identify which leads to chase, refer out, or review further as soon as they arrive.
Apply the same evaluation criteria to every prospect, reducing human bias and inconsistency.
Automatically trigger follow-ups, assignments, and notifications based on lead quality.
Over time, Qualify becomes more accurate as firms provide feedback and refine criteria, helping teams focus on the right cases faster and more consistently.
How Merlin Qualify Works
At a high level, Qualify follows a simple lifecycle:
You define your firm’s intake rules using a Lead Qualification Agent
Qualify evaluates leads using those rules
You review results and provide feedback when outcomes aren’t what you expect
You have Qualify refine the evaluation criteria based on that feedback
These valuation results appear across Lawmatics and can trigger automations
This approach allows firms to continuously improve lead evaluation accuracy while saving time on manual intake review without losing control over how leads are scored.
What Is a Lead Qualification Agent?
A Lead Qualification Agent is an AI that evaluates incoming leads based on your firm's own intake rules. Each agent represents the evaluation logic for a specific practice area.
Best practice:
Create one agent per major practice area so each area can use its own categories, criteria, and scoring logic.
Each agent includes:
Categories – How leads are classified, such as Chase Hard, Chase, Refer Out, Reject, or Inconclusive
Criteria – The rules that the Agent uses to evaluate leads
Versions – Tracked updates created as criteria are refined over time
Categories, Criteria, and Scores
Understanding these core concepts will help you interpret your Lead Scores:
Categories
Categories represent the outcome for a lead. For example, a category may indicate whether a lead should be prioritized for immediate follow-up (Chase Hard,) referred to another firm (Refer Out,) or reviewed further (Inconclusive.)
Criteria
Criteria are the specific rules the Agent uses to evaluate leads. These may include factors such as case type, jurisdiction, potential case value, urgency, or other client details.
Criteria can be:
Proposed automatically by Qualify & Copilot based on best practices for the practice area.
Proposed automatically by Qualify & Copilot based on existing firm information.
Reviewed and adjusted by the firm, as needed.
Confidence and Reasoning
For every evaluation, Qualify provides:
A Confidence Score, indicating how strongly the lead matches your criteria
Confidence Reasoning, showing which factors influenced the result
This transparency allows firms to understand each recommendation and identify where criteria may need refinement.
What Information Does Merlin Qualify Evaluate?
When a lead submits a form, Qualify reads all fields from that form submission. It also evaluates a set of standard matter fields — such as practice area, contact information, and location — that Lawmatics has identified as relevant to lead qualification.
File uploads are not evaluated. Qualify does not read or attached files.
Notes are optional. Each agent has a “Use Notes” toggle. When enabled, Qualify will also read the latest 10 notes (up to 60 days old, up to 10,000 characters each).
Training Merlin Qualify Over Time
Firms can:
Compare expected outcomes with predicted results
Review reasoning when evaluations don’t match expectations
Provide feedback explaining why a result was correct or incorrect
Based on this feedback, Qualify can propose refinements to the agent’s criteria. Saving these updates creates a new agent version, allowing firms to track improvements over time and compare results across versions.
Where Merlin Qualify Results Appear
Once leads are evaluated, Qualify data appears throughout Lawmatics, including:
This ensures lead evaluations are visible and actionable wherever your team already works.
How Merlin Qualify Drives Action with Automations
Qualify evaluations can be used as an action in automations and to trigger automations within Lawmatics.
For example, when a lead is categorized as Chase Hard with high confidence, an automation can send an E-Signature Request and assign a follow-up task to your team:
This allows firms to engage high-priority prospects immediately, without waiting for manual review.
