Custom Matter Views

Updated today

Custom Matter Views allow you to tailor how the Matter Profile appears for different teams at your firm. You can create specific layouts for the Details tab and sidebar, organizing matter and contact information into sections that match your workflows.

For example, you may want one layout for intake staff and another for case managers, or different layouts for each practice area.

Custom Matter Views give you full control over how information is displayed so your team only sees what’s most relevant.

Accessing the Custom View Builder

To create or manage matter views:

  1. Navigate to Settings

  2. Click Matters

  3. Select Custom Views

From this page, you’ll see a list of your existing views, including the Default View.

From here you can:

  • Edit an existing view

  • Create a new view

  • Manage which users see each view

Creating or Editing a View

When creating or editing a view, you’ll configure two main areas of the Matter Profile:

  • Details Tab

  • Sidebar

Building the Details Tab

The Details tab builder allows you to organize information into custom sections.

Within the builder you can:

  • Create sections and give them custom names

  • Add standard matter fields

  • Add custom matter fields

  • Add contact fields

  • Insert dividers within sections

  • Label dividers to further organize groups of fields

You can create as many sections as needed and include as many fields as you want within each section.

This makes it easy to group related information together—for example:

  • Case Details

  • Client Information

  • Incident Information

  • Insurance Details

Configuring the Sidebar

The Sidebar builder works similarly and allows you to organize fields into sidebar sections.

Within the sidebar you can:

  • Create multiple sections

  • Add matter or contact fields

  • Organize the most important information for quick reference

This area is typically used for key details your team needs to access quickly.

If no sidebar layout is configured, the Matter Profile will fall back to the standard Essential Information sidebar.

View Settings

Each view also includes settings that control who will see the layout.

Within the view settings you can configure:

  • View Name – Give the layout a clear, descriptive name

  • User Roles – Choose which roles will see this view

  • Practice Areas – Choose which practice areas this view applies to

This allows you to create targeted layouts such as:

  • Intake view for personal injury matters

  • Case manager view for family law matters

  • Litigation view for attorneys

FAQs

What happens to existing practice area custom fields?

Existing practice area custom fields will be migrated to matter custom fields as part of this release. Any related merge fields will continue to work as expected. In practice, these migrated fields will function similarly to a prebuilt Matter Details section for each practice area.

If multiple practice areas contain fields with the same name, Lawmatics will automatically append a number (for example, (1)) to avoid overwriting any existing data.

What happens if two views are created with the same user role and practice area?

If multiple views are configured with the same role and practice area combination, the system will default to the Default View to avoid conflicts.

Can users edit fields that are not included in their view?

If a field is not included in the layout, users will not be able to edit it directly from the Matter Details tab. They can still update the fields via custom form and automation.

What happens if no sidebar is configured in a custom view?

If a view does not include a custom sidebar layout, the Matter Profile will automatically display the standard Essential Information sidebar.
